Handpainting Wool Safely at Home

When: March 17th, 1pm-5ish

Where: my home in La Mesa

Cost: $45

This class will focus on handpainting wool safely and easily at home, using several different methods to achieve different effects on fiber or yarn.

Included in the cost of the class is 16 oz. of superwash merino fiber or 8 oz. of superwash merino yarn in the weight of your choice (chunky, worsted, sport, or fingering), and all you will need to bring to the class is a sense of color adventure and fun. Please wear old clothes and/or an apron, in case the color adventure and fun gets boisterous.

(If you prefer kitchen gloves, or have an allergy to latex or a dislike of latex gloves, please bring your own gloves.)

Yarn or fiber can be divided into up to four equal portions of yarn if you give me advance notice.

Methods used will be vat dyeing, roaster (crockpot) dyeing, space dyeing using plastic wrap & steaming, and another method akin to cooking wool which doesn't have snappy name.

Materials you take home will be your own beautifully dyed yarn/fiber, a handout cheatsheet with all that information you will find important and want to remember but will be too busy having fun and painting your yarn/fiber to write down, and a resource sheet with contact information for quality supplies from vendors with competitive pricing.

Color mixing and colorway choices will be discussed, and all methods will focus on safely and efficiently replicating the process in your own home.

My goal is that you will experiment here with the different methods, see my system for dyeing safely and storing the dyes safely in my tiny kitchen, choose for yourself which method(s) suit your home and preferences best and be able to go home and replicate your favorite colorways at home with a minimum of fuss and bother.

Dyeing safely is easy and fun, and I'll prove it to you!

Participation will be capped at 7 students.
